Please note that California State Parks cannot accept gift donations of cultural items subject to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (Native American funerary items, sacred items, and/or objects of cultural patrimony), unless donated with the written permission of a culturally affiliated tribe.

Interested in conducting research in the State Indian Museum collection?

We welcome our Tribal partners to visit and study the cultural items currently in our care. If you are a descendant from a culturally affiliated tribe and/or a tribal representative and wish to visit your cultural belongings, please contact Taylor Moore, Museum Curator I, at taylor.moore@parks.ca.gov.
Capital District complies with the federal regulations outlined in the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Duty of Care section, which stipulate that museums obtain free, prior, and informed consent from lineal descendants, Indian Tribes, or Native Hawaiian organizations prior to allowing any access to or research on cultural items. Therefore, we do not permit research access to the State Indian Museum collection unless the researcher has first obtained free, prior, and informed consent from the appropriate parties. All research requests for the State Indian Museum collection will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
There are no ancestors (human remains) in the State Indian Museum collection. Repatriation through NAGPRA is the purview of California State Parks Tribal Affairs Office. For more information about the NAGPRA program please contact Tribal Affairs Manager Patricia Garcia at patricia.garcia@parks.ca.gov:
